Nutritional and Metabolic Effects on Immune Competence of the Periparturient Cow

چکیده
The transition from pregnant, non-lactating to non-pregnant, lactating is too often a disastrous experience for the cow. Most of the metabolic diseases of dairy cows milk fever, ketosis, retained placenta, and displacement of the abomasum occur within the first 2 wk of lactation. In addition to metabolic disease, the majority of infectious disease experienced by the dairy cow, especially mastitis, but also diseases such as Johne's disease and Salmonellosis, become clinically apparent during the first 2 wk of lactation.

Transition Cow Immune Function and Interaction with Metabolic Diseases
Nearly all dairy cows experience some degree of immune suppression during the 2 to 3 weeks before and after calving. Typically, this is in the area of a 25 to 40% decline in both neutrophil function (innate immunity) and lymphocyte function (acquired immunity). Metabolic diseases, such as milk fever and ketosis, exacerbate immune suppression at this time; often resulting in closer to 60 to 80% ...

The physiological processes that underlie the reproductive cycle impose considerable metabolisable protein (MP) demands on a female, especially during the periparturient period. When MP supply falls short of MP demand (i.e. MP becomes scarce), certain, if not all, bodily functions are expected to be penalised. It has been proposed that partitioning of scarce MP is prioritised to reproductive ra...

Most dairy cows experience some degree of hypocalcemia during the periparturient period. There is, however, a sub-group of dairy cows that experience a breakdown in their ability to maintain plasma calcium and, consequently, suffer from severe hypocalcemia. This condition is also known as milk fever and usually occurs in cows in their third or greater lactation. The precise metabolic lesions re...
متن کاملReproductive management of postpartum cows.
High reproductive efficiency in the dairy cow requires a disease-free transition period, high submission rates to AI and high pregnancy rates per service. A key risk factor that causes increased incidence of metabolic disease is low negative energy balance (NEB) in the periparturient and early postpartum periods. Low NEB decreases LH pulse frequency, growth rate and diameter of dominant follicl...
متن کاملMetabolic Considerations for Immunity in Transition Cows
Infections of the mammary gland (mastitis) or uterus (metritis) are common sources of inflammation in lactating dairy cows, particularly during the periparturient period. Other health disorders common during this period (e.g., milk fever and ketosis) do not arise from infectious organisms, but instead have metabolic origins. Although the etiologies of infectious and metabolic disorders differ, ...
